New Semester of a New Year

October 20, 08 by -FCUK-

3 weeks of class and what have I learnt? That all subjects are 100% exam based, that Digi is used by most of the foreign workers, that free trade and protectionism has their own advantages and disadvantages, that working in a Ice-cream factory is cool, that “birds and bees” stand for sex awareness campaign and many many more.

Ultimate is back in action, with now more people, more practice days, hardcore sessions and pure ultimate laughters and fun with Chong. ACE Society, Action with Compassion and Empathy, is also back, with 200+ members, more than double of the amount of members last year. 2 Clubs that I’m proud to be at, 2 Clubs which hopefully can win awards again.

So what’s changed? What’s happening for the past 2 years? Crazy upgrade of computer labs, more tables for laptops, more signboards to help the uncertain, the busy, busy Club and Society Fair and Saiful is learning how to play DotA.

Now - 19 inch flat screen monitor, 4GB ram, Intel Core 2 Duo, Windows Vista and Office 2007 !!

Nice.

More tables in SA now for students to Ad Hoc for DotA and Counterstrike do homework, have meetings and eat.

What’s behind the doors are now easier to be identified.

ACE Society’s booth during the Club and Society Fair.

2 Great awards last year.

Ultimate Frisbee’s booth.

We don’t really like huckers. But sometimes we do huck (Caleb and John !!).

Members of Ultimate Frisbee.

Now I know how it feels like to be ran over by rain water when a speeding car goes through the puddle. And if you haven’t tried eating at the stairs of the main door of Avenue K, you should try it. Nothing better than a 1901 Hot Dog, on the 19th day of the month, on the stairs and not raining. And yeah, I shaved, again….

Wordpress Version Upgraded

October 03, 08 by -FCUK-

I finally upgraded my Wordpress Version, after using the old one for almost 2 years now. I had to do it manually, but to my surprise it was kind of fast. Luckily everything that I have on my blog is still in tact.

I used this Wordpress Upgrade Manual which is an extended guide that has more steps. The backuping part was the longest, but after that everything was quite easy. If you have to backup your database manually, it is advised to use the Wordpress Backup Database Plugin, created by Skippy. In just a simple few steps, your database will be backup and it will also be easily restored.

Next thing that I want to experiment on is SimpleViewer, which looks very cool. Just need some patience and understanding on the manual to execute the plugins.

Till then, more Frisbee posts to come….

Ultimate Frisbee in Nottingham Games 2007-2008

September 29, 08 by -FCUK-

Photos courtesy of Chong and Ren Yi.

It was in the month of March 2008, when we had our first Ultimate Frisbee in conjunction with our Nottingham Games. A 3 day period, with a little fiery temper, rain, and laughter, made Ultimate somewhat a success. Even though the sport didn’t had a good reception and is unfamiliar to many people, there were 6 teams sent by students and 1 team from staffs.

Format was 5 aside, with 8 in a team, with the field size smaller than actual size. It was kinda hard for each team to find players as the University divides teams according to courses and faculties. But nonetheless, everyone had fun. The gold member went to Chemical Engineering, Silver went to Pharmacy (they have tall guys) and Bronze went to Business School (that’s us). Looking forward to the next Nottingham Games…..

Our Business School.

Cheering before matches.

Our captain, Sean, with his strong 2 handed throw.

Again in action.

Gan, after scoring. Very delighted.

Sometimes, these things do happen in Frisbee.

Rain was pouring hard and strong during one of the days. But we are hardcore players.

Saiful enjoyed scoring in the rain.

Everyone enjoyed themselves despite the rain.

Bronze it was for us.

The Year 1 That Was

September 11, 08 by -FCUK-

The year that was - the good old happy moments of Year 1. Lots of memories from Year 1, with exams, car wash, BBQ, Frisbee, geeky specs and many more that had made Year 1 interesting. Really enjoyed myself during the first year, with some crazy things that we do, playing Frisbee at night, fun mamak moments, getting awesome discounts from Ren Yi for Starbucks and spending time on the black leather sofa watching television and talking crap.

Alright, pictures will speak by themselves now.

Year 1 Class photo.

Exams during Semester 1. The picture just makes Saiful look good, but don’t be fooled. :p

Gan, washing my his car at my house.

Sze Wei spending a night at my house. Why? Cause he forgot to bring his keys. Don’t go back PJ so often next time. Hehe.

The time of the year again, and that wasn’t mine. We know whose was it.

Our university gotten for us, students, a new set of TV and surround speaker.

Waiting for exam results. Yeah, waiting. Seriously.

Me heading to Taman Sinar Harapan for some charity work with ACE Society.

Lollipop day.

Balakong (Cheras Selatan) trip together. Saiful was trespassing in the liquor section.

BBQ night.

Saiful and his new geeky specs.

Kelantan boy, Gan, with his raffles draw tickets. Excited and organised.

Everyone was waiting eagerly with their draw tickets, hoping to win. By the way, Gan didn’t win anything.

Cute puppy sniffing Gan’s shoes.

Semester 2 exams, look what exams made us into.

Our own Year 1 class annual dinner at TGI Fridays.

Days of Year 1 filled with people sleeping in class, especially during Law Lectures.

Days of Year 1 filled with endless Frisbee fun and Tournaments.

Playing Frisbee in the pool, this was how crazy we became when footballers were using the field.

Days of Year 1 filled with gay action and there’s more to come during Year 2.

Those probably sum up the Year 1 life and some special happenings. Year 2 is starting in 2 weeks and Chinese New Year will be different this time without Datuk K and Papa Bear. Am just looking forward for more Frisbee action, touneys to join and see what other funny things that Saiful and Gan will get/have….

Ultimate at Sungai Petani, Kedah

September 04, 08 by -FCUK-

In reference to the previous post, here is the summary of what I did in Kedah for the past 3 months, with mainly spreading the love of Ultimate Frisbee at Sungai Petani, Kedah. Man, I got to say, it was tiring, exciting and just pure fun. To be finally able to play Ultimate at your hometown makes it not boring anymore whenever you get back. Yeah, there were ups and downs over there, and boy I have to say, one of the downs really pissed me really bad, but seeing the students enjoying themselves helped me to take my mind off it. They are passionate about it too, but too bad they are being hold up by exams.

I went to 3 secondary school, with 2 being Kebangsaan and 1 being Chinese. Plus, I have been to UiTM Merbok, Kedah too, but that didn’t turn out really well due to time constrain. Nonetheless, we had our Sungai Petani pickup every Friday, 8.30 AM, for about 5 weeks at a public field, Jubilee Park. Just hope they will continue the pickup session when I’m not there anymore.

Note: if it’s raining, it’s most probably cancelled.

Students from Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Ibrahim, my previous school.

Students from Sekolah Menengah Sin Min, the Chinese school.

Students from Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Sungai Pasir, the last school that I went.

Students practising their throws.

UiTM Merbok, Kedah. They already had some players there who learnt how to play Frisbee before. The guy in the center is Azlan, from UiTM Shah Alam (Sungai Petani dude too).

Our pickup spot, Jubilee Park. Field isn’t 100m but this is what we have to make do with. Every Friday, 8.30 AM.

The youngest student, standard 5, Mr. Chew.

Drill sessions during pickup.

Just like this shot.

Ultimate game time.

There are many people whom I want to thank for helping me so much, morally and physically. Shoutout to my parents and sister, Doug, Kuan, James, John, Mr. K.K Lim, Azrin, Alvin, Sean, other Nottingham Knights/Oops members too, Azlan, Bani, Mr. Soma and also my students from all the schools. You guys were, are and always will be great. So I guess that’s the chapter of my Ultimate life experience during the past 3 months, and a new chapter begins back at Nottingham, with more exciting training days to come and also tournaments to join. Can’t wait…..

*Updated: Pickup at Jubilee Park on Wednesday 3-6 PM

3 Plans, 1 Success

July 29, 08 by -FCUK-

3 of my plans for the summer didn’t look to be really great. Qualifying for Nationals didn’t work for me, as I was busy for both the qualifying sessions, so I couldn’t make it. Blogging on those which I would have supposed to blog also failed as I didn’t really update my blog for really, really long already.

2 plans down and that leaves only the Frisbee plan and it succeeded. I have been teaching Ultimate Frisbee at Sungai Petani voluntarily for about 1 month now. 2 big schools, 1 mini school, and later will be my first session in another big school. First pick-up session in public ground was held on the past Friday and Saturday. Turnout wasn’t that bad, as around 20 people came to enjoy themselves.

Am glad that I was given the opportunity and there’s just a lot of people for me to thank, but I shall leave that for later post. Just a brief blog entry here on how am I doing and I have to say, tired tired. It’s not easy to spread Ultimate when you are going solo or double. I wish Oops (formerly known as Nottingham Knights) were here….

Comedic Politic

July 14, 08 by -FCUK-

Want to watch funny politics? The last time I heard, Malaysian one was not too bad. In fact it’s quite good and makes you laugh so that you can live longer to see how slow Malaysia’s development is.

So tomorrow live debate, Anwar and Information Minister, 9.00 pm. I think it would be great, maybe like how Robin Williams is in the movie “Man of The Year” …….

Stomach Filler - Broga Pan Mee

July 10, 08 by -FCUK-

A small stall, located at the border of Selangor and Negeri Sembilan, is known by many from Semenyih and Broga to serve good Pan Mee (noodles). Unfamiliar to many others for its town name, explorers of University of Nottingham managed to find the stall and ever since then infested their stalls regularly. This shows that good food is needed to be found. It won’t come to you.

Food
Pan Mee, which can be served either dry (with black sauce) or with soup, makes students travel into the current half-forest like journey just to have them. Comes in several portion, with small, medium, big and special ordered big big, are the alternatives, even though they don’t look too much of a difference. Regardless of how big or how small the portion is, the taste is definitely good.

After a good meal of lunch, Ais Kacang, a local Malaysian desert can also be served. Not as good as the one compared to Penang Island, but it can serves as a mouth quenching item when the weather is hot. Apart from that, Cendol (local delight) is also available as drinks.

Environment
The place is neither behind close doors nor it is air conditioned, but a place which is cheap to maintain allows them to charge a low pricing for customers. Pan Mee will be served by the stall in front, by several aunties or ladies, while the drinks and Ais Kacang desert is served by an uncle (with the habit of putting a coin in his ear). The place usually will be packed around 12.45PM to 2.00PM. After eating, you can head on down to a famous temple in Broga Town, which has made an appearance in several movies, with Ah Long Pte Ltd being the latest one to be filmed there. Enjoy the beautiful scenery while you are there.

Price
The food served is really cheap. Like my friend, Chong, always says in Hokkien “Pan Gi Ko Tuo De”, which means “Cheap and Big Portion”.

Verdict
For those who are really adventurous and really want to explore Malaysian in and out, head on down to Broga Town, by passing through Semenyih town and the University of Nottingham first, to try the noodles out. As a student, it is definitely worth my money to eat there with tasty and cheap food being served….
